White Tiger: A Hero's Compulsion was written by Tamora Pierce and Timothy Liebe, and began it's 6 issue mini-series in 2006, but has since been released in trade paper back form, White Tiger #1-6.

The White Tiger mini-series follows the emergence of the White Tiger, Angela Del Toro. Fans of the Daredevil series would know that Del Toro first appeared in a number of issues of Daredevil, as an FBI agent drawn into the investigation of the Daredevil's true identity, as well as the investigation into the death of her uncle Hector, the previous White Tiger. In Daredevil, Del Toro quit the FBI when she realised the good she could do with her new found power, inherited via her uncle's Jade Tiger amulets, eventually taking on the White Tiger moniker.

White Tiger: A Hero's Compulsion begins with Daredevil Matt Murdock in prison, leaving Del Toro seemingly on her own to figure out what to do with her new found power and responsibility. Del Toro, with the help of Black Widow, Luke Cage, Spider-Man and Iron Fist (who is doubling as Daredevil while Matt Murdock is in prison), eases herself into the role of White Tiger. While starting to clean up her neighbourhood, Del Toro finds herself investigating the shady activities of an organisation called Chaneyi.

In many respects White Tiger: A Hero's Compulsion is a standard superhero tale. An FBI agent, inherits powers that improve her ability to fight crime. In that regard, there is nothing revolutionary or ground breaking going on, yet still, it's an enjoyable enough story. The story concluded as most comic arcs do, leaving the door wide open for a followup. It's a bit of a shame that Marvel didn't decide to take White Tiger further, but I guess they too didn't see enough to set the title apart from a host of other comics hitting the stands at the time.

Don't hold your breath for any Del Toro/White Tiger follow up either, as, from what I've read, White Tiger is killed by Lady Bullseye in a relatively recent issue of Daredevil.

Overall, I'd give White Tiger: A Hero's Compulsion 6 out of 10

The Spider-Man: Breakout trade paper back collects the five issue Spider-Man: Breakout miniseries that was originally published between June - October 2005. Breakout expands upon some of the events that occur in the first few issues of New Avengers. Basically, if you haven't read the New Avengers Vol.1 trade paper back, you'll struggle to make much sense of Breakout. To re-cap, New Avengers began with a prison break, instigated by Electro, that results in the escape of a large number of supervillians from the island prison call "The Raft". A number of heroes, including Spider-Man, are in the area, and attempt to stop the breakout. These events are the catalyst for the formation of the New Avengers.

Breakout opens sometime prior to the events featured in the New Avengers, and focuses more on two rival criminal factions, who have a world class beef with one another. Once the breakout occurs, these two factions take their problems out on one another, with New York as the back drop. Spider-Man is caught in the middle.

As the New Avengers haven't officially been 'assembled' yet, Spider-Man is left mostly on his own devices to figure out why the two groups are trying to kill each other, and why they've stayed in New York when they could have skipped town already. Are they looking for something? Or someone?

Breakout is a strange miniseries, and I can't really figure out what the motivation for it was? Perhaps Marvel wanted to capitalise on the popularity of Spider-Man a little more, and decided to rush this one out, but I still don't see how this warranted it's own miniseries. The problem I had with breakout was that it doesn't really add anything to the New Avengers story, and it's more about the villains than it is Spider-Man, although that's not necessarily a bad thing.

As far as tie-ins go, this is probably one of the more unnecessary ones that I've read. While the story following the villains is interested, I'm not sure that it's deserving of it's own series. The artwork is good, and the characters are interesting enough, but it still, I can only give this a generous 6 out of 10. Fortunately I picked this one up for a couple of bucks in the last TFAW scratch and dent sale, otherwise I may not have felt so generous in my assessment.

Spider-Man: Reign

What would Spider-Man be like if you were to fast forward thirty five years into his future? That’s the question Spider-Man: Reign attempts to answer. Spider-Man: Reign was written and illustrated by Kaare Andrews, and was a four issue limited series published by Marvel between December 2006 and March 2007. Whether it exists within the accepted Spider-Man continuity or not is probably open to debate, and even more so if you’ve kept up with the “Brand New Day” story line.

Reign begins in New York, which has all the hallmarks of being a police state. It’s people are subject to extreme governmental controls, and Spider-Man has not been seen or heard from for some time. “Super crime” no longer exists, and the city is policed by a group known as the Reign.

Peter Parker is now a frail looking lonely old bearded man. When we first meet him, he is getting fired from his job at a florist. Peter Parker is a broken man, the kind of guy to get depressed just looking at.
Meanwhile the city’s Mayor is preparing to launch his grand plan to protect New York from terrorist attacks. The WEBB will keep the bad people out, and the ‘good’ people in. There’s no way that plan could back fire is there?

When J. Jonah Jameson appears, encouraging Peter to take on the role of Spider-Man again in order to put a stop to the oppression faced by the people of New York, you just know that it’s all going to end in tears. The Mayor assembles a squad of former super villains to track down and remove the Spider-Man threat, while the people of New York see Spider-Man as a symbol of freedom. It’s all very stirring stuff. I can’t really say much more about the plot without giving away a few major ‘surprises’ so I’ll stop right about now.

New marvel Spider-Man: Reign

Spider-Man: Reign is a decent story. It shares a lot in common with Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, which is both good and bad. Good, because if you are going to borrow plot points from a story, you may as well borrow from one of the best. Bad, because if you can’t top the source material, you should probably look elsewhere.

What did I learn?

One disturbing revelation is that Mary-Jane has died of cancer, which was apparently the result of long term exposure to… wait for it… Peter’s “radioactive bodily fluids”… ewwww!!!

Overall, Spider-Man: Reign was an interesting read. It was much darker than any of the other Spider-Man stuff I’ve read, and definitely owes a lot to the Dark Knight Returns. The artwork wasn’t really my cup of tea, but I guess it was solid. The plot kept on moving, although anything longer than four issues would have been stretching the friendship a little. I’d recommend this for the Spider-Man completists. Casual fans should look elsewhere. I’ll give it 6 out of 10.
