Clearly no love for Jar Jar. If only Deadpool had had a chance to sit down with George Lucas prior to Phantom Menace things might have turned out differently.

Five trade paper backs on my must read list (July 2009)

It's been a while since I order a bunch of trade paper backs, so it looks like I have a bit of a backlog on my hands. With that in mind, I thought I'd put together a list of the five trade paper backs currently on my must read list.

Deadpool Volume 1: Secret Invasion

Collecting the first five issues of the latest Deadpool series, Deadpool Volume 1: Secret Invasion also serves as one of the many Secret Invasion tie-ins. Deadpool takes on a secret mission for Nick Fury and convinces the Skrulls that he wants to join their team, allowing the Skrulls to create a multitude of Skrully Deadpool clones.

While it may be written by Daniel Way, the man behind the mostly plodding Wolverine: Origins, as a Deadpool fan, I'm going to give this one a shot.

Deadpool Volume 2: Dark Reign

Deadpool Volume 2: Dark Reign Premiere HC collects issues #6-7, 10-11 of the new Deadpool series. I'm keen to read this one as from the promo blurb it sounds like it'll follow on from one of the more interesting "Secret Invasion" developments, the emergence of Norman Osborne as the successor to Tony Stark.

What bugs me though, is that in usual Marvel fashion they've split the story into two different trades, no doubt in an effort to wring a few more bucks out of people like me. So if, like me, you want to read the full story, you'll also need to pick up...

Dark Reign: Deadpool/Thunderbolts

Dark Reign: Deadpool/Thunderbolts collects issues eight and nine of the new Deadpool series, and issues #130-131 of the Thunderbolts.

This collections covers off the conflict between Deadpool and Norman Osborn, with Deadpool forced to take on the "all new" Thunderbolts. Speaking of which, I'm a little behind in the Thunderbolts series as well, but there are a couple of titles I'm going to need to drop due to a coin shortage, and Thunderbolts is looking like it may be one of them.

Sounds interesting, just a shame Marvel could not have packed it all in to the Deadpool volume 2 collection.

Y: The Last Man, Vol. 2 (Deluxe Edition) (Hardcover)

Y: The Last Man, Vol. 2 (Deluxe Edition) collects issues 6 through 10 of Y: The Last Man, and continues to follow the story of Yorick Brown and his pet monkey Ampersand, who are the only survivors of a plague that killed off all the male mammals on Earth. Now being the one guy on a planet full off women may sound ok to start with, apparently it's not all beer and skittles. This second uber collection follows Yorick and friends as they race across the US trying to discover why Yorick and his monkey survived when all the other men in the world died.

It's a post apocalyptic story with a difference. Looking forward to getting my hands on this one.

Moon Knight Volume 4: Death Of Marc Spector

The revived Moon Knight series is one of my favorites. The first three trades were crackers, and I'm looking forward to the arrival of the forth. Like Deadpool, Moon Knight Volume 4: Death Of Marc Spector TPB follows the on from the Skrull Invasion event and Norman Osborn's attempt apprehend Marc Spector. Moon Knight is probably one of the darkest character occupying the Marvel universe, so the Moon Knight vs. The Thunderbolts is likely to be a completely different beast compared to the Deadpool battle.

This trade also includes the "Silent Night" one shot, which should showcase Moon Knight Christmas style.

Deadpool movie finally gets the nod

The Marvel website has confirmed that the Merc with a Mouth, Deadpool, will be getting his very own solo movie. This is big news... for me at least... There is not a lot of information available as yet but Marvel are saying that... well not a lot, so I'll just cut and paste:

The newly confirmed Deadpool film, which would be produced by Lauren Shuler Donner and Marvel, has Ryan Reynolds slated to star and would be a complete exploration of the character - his origins, his emergence as the Merc with the Mouth, and more!

This news is enough to give me a cyber chubby. I am hoping that they completely forget about the "Deadpool" that featured in the closing stages of the Wolverine movie though. For me that was the worst part of the Wolverine film.

Wolverine: Origins Volume 5

I have to admit, I had been very close to dropping Wolverine Origins up until volume 4 (collecting Wolverine: Origins #16-20 and Annual #1), in which did just enough to maintain my interest, largely due to the appearance of Captain America, Bucky and Nick Fury in the World War II flashbacks. The appearance of Deadpool on the last page of issue #20 had me eagerly anticipating the release of volume 4.

I pre-ordered Wolverine: Origins Volume 5 - Deadpool Premiere HC (Wolverine) from Amazon, fortunately before the value of the Aussie dollar took a nosedive. Wolverine: Origins Volume 5 collected issues #21-27 (even though Amazon only list it as containing #21-25) and begins with Deadpool having been hired by a mysterious third party to catch and kill Wolverine. The action takes place in San Francisco, and basically follows Deadpool doing what he does, running around, wise cracking and blowing stuff up. The running battle spans three plus issues, as you'd expect of two guys that can pretty much heal from any wound. In the end though, it's Deadpool that gets the upper hand, managing to bring Wolverine down.

As Deadpool has Wolverine restrained and strung up over a swimming pool, with the intention of drowning him, Wolverine's son Daken arrives and proceeds to cut off poor Deadpool's hand. Daken flicks the switch that would drop his old man into the water, however an explosion throws Wolverine against a wall and he remains on land. A single handed Deadpool then goes toe to toe with Daken. In the mean time Wolverine is able to free himself.

Once Wolverine regains his composure, he's able to distract Daken long enough, drawing him out into the open, where the Winter Soldier is waiting with rifle and scope at the ready. The Winter Soldier fires a carbonadium bullet, striking Daken in the back of the head. You have to go back to volume 2 or 3 to recall that Wolverine sourced a couple of carbonadium bullets, carbonadium being a substance that dramatically slows the mutants healing factor.

As Wolverine picks up Daken, ready to take him away for 'de-programming', Wolverine turns to a recovering Deadpool to reveal that the whole thing had been a set up. Wolverine had hired Deadpool, through the Winter Soldier, in the hope that the threat of someone else killing Wolverine, and therefore spoiling his chance of revenge, would draw Daken out into the open. This marked the end of issue #25 and the end of Steve Dillion's run as illustrator for the Origins series.

Stephen Segovia picked up illustrating duties for issues #26-27, and personally I saw an instant improvement in the series. These issues focused largely on Wolverine taking Daken to a place where he believes they will not be disturbed. A place from Wolverines past that still has a few surprises in store for him. It turns out that in the 1940's, during World War II, and the Japanese internment camps, Wolverine was responsible for recruiting 'volunteers' to participate in experiments for what could have been the beginnings of the Weapon X program. As Wolverine and Daken arrive at what are supposed to be abandoned labs, we find out that not all of the experiments have been destroyed. At the same time we are treated to flashbacks of Daken's past. We learn that he showed signs of cruelty toward others from a relatively early age, and like his father, his mutant powers manifest during a family crisis. Following the deaths of his adoptive parents, Romulus appears, to guide him, and then induct him into a secret society of killers. The key to these two issues is the ending. Daken awakes, but with no apparent recollection of who he is, or what's gone on before. De ja vu?

Volume 5 really was a book in two halves. Although I'm a big Deadpool fan, I felt that the five issues he featured in were a little unnecessary in the context of everything else that's been happening in Origins. The five issues revealed very little about the history the two characters may have shared, so we never really learnt anything new. All up the five issues could have comfortably been condensed into two, although I suppose the same could be said for volumes 1-4 as well. To me issues #21-25 felt like a struggling sitcom that calls in the A List special guest star to lift flagging ratings. Issues #26-27 on the other hand were quite good, and I'd go so far as saying they were the best two issues I've read of Origins to date.

My gripe with this volume as with volumes 1-4 is that the plot can be described as 'plodding'. This seven issue collection could most definitely been condensed into four. Dillion's artwork is really not to my taste so I'm glad he's moved on to other things.

Overall, Wolverine: Origins Volume 5 will not be the worst collection you'll read this year, but by the same token, it probably won't be the best either. I'd give it 6 out of 10.

New Mutants #98

When New Mutants #98 first hit the stands in 1991 there was something that set it apart from the other comics around at the time. No, I'm not Rob Liefeld's absurdly over the top characterisations, bulging muscles, and proliferation of pointless pouches*. As you can see from the cover of New Mutants #98, drawing people does not appear to be one of Liefeld's strong points. Some would have considered this to be a major road block on the path to comics stardom. Not Mr Liefeld.

Whilst it is difficult to determine the exact number of atrocities committed on the comic community by Liefeld, it is important to remember that, in 1991, he was one of the most popular artists on Marvel's payroll. Furthermore, Liefeld's legacy is not all doom and gloom, without him, we would be without the teachings of Deadpool.

When we first meet the "Merc with the Mouth", he's a red suit wearing guy with skinny legs and weird feet (thanks Liefeld!). Granted, Deadpool's first appearance is a brief one. Deadpool is contracted to take out would-be world saviour Cable. After dealing out an ass spanking to Cable and a couple of other bit players (Boom Boom anyone?), Deadpool is unceremoniously stabbed in the back, literally, by Cable's on-again/off-again flame, Domino.

What can we learn from this?

Don't turn your back on a women that has a better than average chance at being able to throw knives and have them hit you in the back pointy end first.

Dodgy art work aside, copies of New Mutants #98 in excellent condition have been known to go for upward of $100US on eBay. With Deadpool due to make an appearance in the Wolverine Origins movie, his stocks are most definitely on the rise.
